A history of Catholic Special Education in St. Louis. The Department began its work in 1950 with several classrooms in parish schools for children with developmental disabilities. Later the need was addressed for classes to teach children who have learning disabilities. Our agency was a pioneer in this field and there is no other diocese/archdiocese in the nation with a stand-alone special education program. In 1952, we founded a groundbreaking residential school for children with mental retardation: St. Mary's Special School for Exceptional Children. There was St. Joseph's Vocational program for older residents. In 1990 St. Mary's spawned an early intervention program (therapies) for infants and toddlers with special needs. The residential program on Emerson Ave. was phased out by 1998 but St. Mary's preschool has thrived. It has relocated to Spanish Lake on the Trinity High School campus. Today it is a very successful abilities integrated preschool and daycare and in 2003, we expanded it to south county as St. Mary's Preschool-South. St. Joseph's Vocational Program also continues. |
